The American Society for the History of Rhetoric Interest Group
The American Society of the History of Rhetoric interest group invites submissions of panel proposals, round table discussions, workshops and competitive papers from faculty and students. While we welcome papers and proposals suited to the convention theme, "Our Family Values: Defining and Fostering Excellence in Communication Study, Education, and Performance," we encourage any papers creating a broader dialogue between scholar's interests and rhetorical history. While encouraging traditional interpretive frameworks, such as revisiting classical, Roman, medieval studies, we also solicit the use of other viewpoints to increase healthy debate. Therefore, in an effort to spur discussion, the development of gender theory, non-Western thought, or other perspectives are greatly supported. We study the theory, practice, and pedagogy of rhetoric in all periods and languages and welcome any frameworks that will help us shed light on, work through, or revise the history of rhetoric. We offer a "Top Student Paper" award as well as a "Top Paper Award." The Top Student Paper will be submitted for consideration for the Association's Bostrom Award. Presenters and program participants do not have to be members of ASHR.
All submissions are due September 15, 2005. Electronic submissions are preferred for both papers and panel proposals, however, hard copy submissions are accepted. Hard copy submissions should include four copies of the paper and appropriate forms for panel proposals. Requests and justifications for audio-visual equipment must be included with the submission
Papers should include a cover page with title, author's name (please indicate if you are a student), institution, mailing address, phone numbers, and e-mail address. Include the title of the paper on the first page of the text.

Theodore Clevenger Undergraduate Honors Conference in Communication
Undergraduate students are encouraged to submit papers for the Theodore Clevenger Undergraduate Honors Conference (UHC) to be held in conjunction with the 2006 Southern States Communication Association (SSCA) convention April 5-9, 2006 in the Dallas/Addison Marriott Quorum by the Galleria, 14 miles from the Dallas-Forth Worth Airport.
Papers are welcome across the many areas, topics, theories, and methodologies of communication study. Papers may, but need not necessarily, deal with the conference theme, "Our Family Values: Excellence in Undergraduate Communication Scholarship."
Any currently enrolled undergraduate student is eligible to submit a paper. Although single- and multiple-authored papers are welcome, one student must be designated as the submitting/presenting author of each paper and no student may present more than one paper.
The author of the top paper will receive a cash award of $100 and a plaque. All UHC participants will be the guests of SSCA at the convention awards luncheon.
Papers must be double-spaced in 12-point font and with one inch minimum margins. Submissions should not exceed 25 pages, including all references, figures, tables, and appendices; should avoid sexist language; and should include an abstract of 100-150 words. Except for the title page, the identity of the author(s) or the author(s)'s institution should not appear anywhere in the paper.
Submission of a paper implies the author's commitment to attend the Dallas conference if the paper is selected for presentation. All UHC authors are expected to support SSCA by registering for the conference and paying the $50 UHC registration fee, which includes UHC and SSCA convention registration, a ticket to the awards luncheon, and one issue each of the Southern Communication Journal and of SSCA's newsletter Connections.
Papers should be submitted electronically as e-mail attachments to [email protected]. The e-mail message to which an electronic copy is attached must contain: (a) the title of the paper; (b) the name, mailing address, telephone number, e-mail address, and school affiliation of the author; and (c) a statement that explains any audio-visual equipment that is essential for presenting the paper. (Note: AV equipment is expensive, difficult to procure and often unreliable at the convention site and should therefore be requested only when absolutely essential.) Authors whose papers deal with the conference theme should state this in the submission letter. All submissions are assumed to be original; previously published or presented work should be so noted in the submission letter. SSCA reserves the right to disqualify any paper where reason exists to suspect plagiarism.
Submit a paper by attaching it in Microsoft Word format to an e-mail message to: [email protected]
