Know Before You Go
Congratulations on having your work accepted to the Theodore Clevenger, Jr. Undergraduate Honors Conference (UHC)! Here is what you need to know to prepare for your conference experience.
Before You Arrive
Watch for SSCA emails about registration, the convention program, and other important details. Be sure to register before the deadline.
You can register for the conference on the SSCA website (www.ssca.net) under Convention > UHC.
Download the convention program app (available in April) and locate your presentation. Make note of your session time, room, and the other presentations on your panel. You can also use the app to explore other sessions and events.
Preparing Your Presentation
Plan for a 10–15 minute presentation that summarizes your research in a clear, conversational way rather than reading your paper aloud. Focus on what you studied, why it matters, and your key findings. Practice and time your presentation in advance.
Audiovisual equipment may not be available, so be prepared to present without it. If bringing handouts, plan for 15–25 people.
Remember, you are the expert on your research. Focus on sharing your work, not delivering a perfect speech.
What to Expect During Your Session
UHC panels last 75 minutes and typically include four to five student presentations. A chair or moderator will introduce the presenters and keep the session on schedule. Presentations generally follow the order listed in the convention program.
After the presentations, a respondent will provide constructive feedback, followed by audience questions and discussion. If you are asked something you cannot answer, it is fine to acknowledge that you have not considered it. Academic conferences are about exchanging ideas, not having all the answers.
Arrive early to meet your chair and fellow presenters, and plan to stay for the entire session to support the other students.
What to Wear
Dress professionally, particularly on the day of your presentation. You do not need an expensive suit or new wardrobe. Comfortable shoes are recommended since conferences involve plenty of walking.
Wear your SSCA name badge while attending convention sessions and events.
Make the Most of the Convention
Your UHC presentation is just one part of the convention experience. You are encouraged to attend other UHC panels, regular SSCA sessions, the Thursday Welcome Reception, UHC Breakfast, Saturday’s Osborn Reception, textbook exhibits, and the Graduate Fair.
The UHC Breakfast is an opportunity to meet fellow undergraduate presenters and faculty. At the Graduate Fair, you can explore graduate programs and learn about opportunities after completing your degree.
Bringing Family or Guests
Family members, friends, and faculty mentors are welcome to attend your presentation and convention events. Guests must register for the convention and wear their name badges. Be sure to register your guests before the deadline.
You’ll find the guest registration on your UHC registration page.
Enjoy the Experience!
Having your research accepted for presentation is an accomplishment. Take advantage of the opportunity to share your work, learn from others, and meet people who share your interests in Communication Studies. Most importantly, have fun!
